ASTM A53 specification covers steel pipes ranging from NPS 1/8 to NPS 26, with wall thicknesses defined in Table X2.2 and Table X2.3. It allows for customization in dimensions as long as all other specification requirements are met. The standard is used widely in structural applications (such as piles, beams, pillars, and fencing) and low-pressure systems (like water, air, or steam piping).

This specification serves to establish clear communication between end users and manufacturers, ensuring that the pipe meets specific properties and capabilities. ASTM A53 is not typically mandated by national or state codes but has been adopted by ASME for pressure vessel and pressure piping applications, identified as SA53 in ASME BPVC and B31.X codes.

ASTM A53 is commonly manufactured with a Mn/C ratio of 2 to 4, and while it lacks a lower limit for manganese, it is suitable for temperatures above -20°F (-29°C) in SA53 Grade B products. Engineers may opt for higher-grade materials, like SA106 or SA333, for more demanding low-temperature applications.

Seamless pipes under ASTM A53 may undergo non-destructive testing (NDT) instead of hydrotesting, provided the NDT is capable of full-thickness inspection. The pipe also meets ASME B36.10 dimensions, ensuring compatibility with other standards like ASTM A106 and API 5L.
